Good Barbecue In Northeast Mississippi

High On The Hog front door

I love finding a one-off restaurant when out traveling.  You know, the place that the locals frequent, the "hole-in-the-wall" place where everything isn't prepackage and/or frozen when it arrives in the kitchen.  A place where the waitstaff calls people by their name and knows most of the customers.  Well, I found such a place in northeast Mississippi.

From gas station to High On The Hog BBQ

High On The Hog BBQ resides on the north side of US 72 approximately 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US 72 & US 45 in Corinth, MS or about 15.8 miles west of the   and US 72 intersection in Iuka, MS.  The restaurant is a converted gas station.  The pumps have been removed but the awning is there and the space is used for parking.

A friendly smile and warm welcome awaits you

The people are friendly and welcoming.  A smile and "hi" will greet you as you enter.  The menu is simple and direct.  They want to provide great food not an abundance of choices.  You can have sandwich, a plate, family pack or buy the meat by the pound.

Some tasty options

As I was meeting a friend I had not seen in 8 or so years I was "eye-balling" the plate options while I waited.  I figured I should try the bbq pork and as I thought about it I don't think I have ever tried bbq in Mississippi.

My friend Stan (on the right), we are ready for some bbq and conversation!

My friend Stan arrived and we stepped up to the counter to order.  Once again the friendliness of the staff was authentic and appreciated.  We both ordered the pork plate.  I had white beans and potato salad and an iced tea.

Plenty of seating and a little country decor

We sat down at a booth.  The place is not heavily decorated but the simple decor provides a country feel appropriate for NE Mississippi.  What it might lack in decor is overcome with service and flavor.  After a short time the server brought our Styrofoam plate full of what we ordered.  A good helping of pork whas dished out on both plates as well as a tasty side portions.  Stan had coleslaw and onion rings.  They must have been good because there were no leftovers.

Tasty looking lunch served with a smile

Two bbq sauces were on the table.  One labeled "Heat" and the other "Sweet."  I tried both.  The "Heat" was not spicy hot in my opinion (a lot of Tex-Mex may have tempered my opinion).  It was not thick at all and I could taste the vinegar base more than I prefer.  The "Sweet" was thicker but not by a lot.  It had a sweeter taste, but I would not classify it as really sweet.  It was my favorite of the two and I used it on the pork.

The pork had a light smoked flavor (not as pronounced as Texas bbq) and a good texture.  I really enjoyed it and think next time I will try it as a sandwich.  The white beans were cooked with pieces of pork and light seasonings.  A big bowl of the white beans and cornbread would be great!  The potato salad was not like any I had before.  It was mayo based with tasty potatoes.  Very different but good flavor and complimented the pork very well.

If you are out riding (or driving) around Corinth, Mississippi and it's lunch time or early dinner stop by and have some High On The Hog.  If you leave hungry it's your own fault.

Note hours are Wednesday 10:30am - 6:00pm, Thursday - Saturday 10:30am - 7:00pm and closed Sunday - Tuesday.

Arai Helmet Review

 Do you wear a helmet?
Once a rider gets past the debate of to wear or not to wear a helmet if the decide to wear a helmet there are still many more helmet questions to answer.  There are half helmets, full-faced helmets, 3/4 helmets and modular helmets.
So many helmets
There are a numerous helmet manufactures each with dozens of models.  A motorcycle rider can find a helmet for less than $100 or up to over a $1,000.  So many choices.

This can be overwhelming for a new rider.  Making a good decision and keeping the cost in a budget can be difficult.  New motorcycle riders will have friends giving a lot of advice and opinions. Probably the hardest and yet the most important decision revolves around cost.  Does a higher price make that big of a difference?

I have owned six full face helmets made by four different manufacturers over the years as well as multiple half helmets and one 3/4 helmet.  I have been very budget-minded when purchasing gear.  I had to be careful and not spend too much.

I had friends who did not wear helmets, some only half-helmets and among those who wore full-faced helmets there was a wide range of brands and cost.  I would look at the helmets of riders who wore more expensive helmets and I wondered if the money spent was really worth it.  Of course they thought so.

Time for a new helmet
In July 2016 I decided to increase my budget on gear.  So after some shopping around I made a purchase and spent the most I ever had for a new helmet when I bought the Bell Qualifer DLX.  The helmet came with the  Transitions® Adaptive Shield which intrigeud me .

In November 2016 I wrote a review on the Bell Qualifer DLX.   I was very pleased with the helmet and the visor.  The full review gives more details.  You can find the helmet at the Motorcycle Gear Superstore.

As luck would have it I attended a friend's event called the Martin Hootenanny in October of 2016.   At the event there was a silent auction benefiting CMA Run For the Son.

I noticed a pre-owned Arai helmet up for auction.  I examined the helmet and asked some questions.  I decided to bid on it and I won the silent auction for the pre-owned (worn about 5 times) Arai Profile Hotrod helmet (Hotrod graphics).  The helmet had no signs of usage and reports were it had been worn very little.  For $85 I thought "how can I go wrong?"  This was an inexpensive way to get first hand experience and knowledge about a high-end helmet. The graphics are not what I would have chosen in a perfect situation, but the yellow stands out and probably is more visible to automobile drivers.

 hime to wear the Arai
I did not start wearing the Arai helmet until January, after I secured a second Sena 20S helmet mount.  I could now transfer the Sena 20S from Bell helmet to Arai helmet without having to move the mount and speakers.  You can find Arai helmets at the Motorcycle Gear Superstore and
if you make a purchase I get some gas money.

At first I rotated between usig the Bell helmet and the Arai helmet.  By March I had decided on wearing the Arai for every ride.  The three major reasons for wearing the Arai full time were comfort, ventilation and reduced wind noise.  The fit and feeling of the Arai was so comfortable.  The material on the inside was smooth and soft.  The shape fit me well, although I know some motorcycle riders where the shape is not best for them.

The airflow was noticeably better.  My head did not get as hot or sweaty and I could feel the air flow over the skull.  The chin vent and forehead air vents allowed a good amount of airflow and they were easy to open and close.  With the amount of air flow provided I was surprised the road noise was not more intense.  The noise level was the least I had experienced with a full-faced helmet!

The Aria helmet is one of my favorite and best motorcycle gear buys so far!  I made a video review of the Aria helmet for my YouTube Channel and you can see it by following this link to Arai Profile Video Review.  You will find other reviews, ride videos and more on the Ordinary Biker Oz Channel.  Subscribe and you will get notice when I post new videos about gear, roads and more.

Milestone

On Saturday April 24, 2010 at 10:20 on TX 5 at the south edge of Howe, TX my 2003 VStar 1100 reached 100,000 miles!
100,000 miles on an air-cooled v-twin

It was a pretty spring day in Texas
Just wanted to share the milestone.  Bike is running great although I have a small oil leak that I am trying to track down.  I think I know where it is and how to fix it, now I just need to do it.

I decided to "celebrate" by take one the best roads in our area to Sherman, where I had a scheduled meeting with the area Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) leadership.  I continued north on TX 5 into Howe where I turned east on FM 902.  There is a nice duo of sweeping curves a little way out of Howe and the small country road is in good shape and lightly traveled.

FM 902 end in Tom Bean where in intersects TX 11.  I turned east for one block and then turned north on FM 2729 and head to FM 697 known as Old Ida road.  Old Ida road is an eleven mile stretch of great curves and hills with some great views of the area.  I missed about 3-4 miles of the eastern most part of FM 697 but I greatly enjoyed the ride.

It was a pretty day and there was no traffic.  I even pulled a U-turn to go back and take some pictures of the donkeys that were grazing.  There was a herd of about 20.  I have seen a lot of donkey, but it just seemed like a good time for a photo.
Momma and baby away from the herd
FM 697 a great road in the NT area.
FM 697 is not the Tail of the Dragon, but it is a great road and I enjoyed the celebration of the milestone by dragging some floorboards on the curves and enjoying the scenery.
